The Frederick County Hepatitis Clinic, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide comprehensive access to care for persons infected with viral hepatitis.  We also provide advocacy, community outreach and educational programming for Health Care professionals, medication instruction classes and support groups for victims of hepatitis, their families and the general public, and undertake research in hepatitis related areas.  We are not an agency of the Frederick County Government or of the Frederick County Health Department.

The Frederick County Hepatitis Clinic, Inc. was founded in December 1999 by Michael S. Rudman, M.D. (retired 2009), and since the year 2000 has helped hundreds of patients and their families to cope with viral hepatitis.  Our patients come not only from Frederick County but from across Maryland and even from other states.  The clinic operates on a surprisingly modest budget provided mostly through private foundations, charitable donations, pharmaceutical education and unrestricted grants and from the Frederick County Grants for Human Services.  It is able to operate due to a series of unique arrangement that were forged between the community and national stakeholders which allows the Frederick County Hepatitis Clinic to provide the highest standard of treatment to all patients.  The clinic charges a $35 office visit fee for the uninsured and underinsured, and waives that fee when necessary.  The visit fees and insurance premiums that we collect only cover a fraction of our direct costs.  The Frederick Memorial Hospital provides laboratory and procedural testing at no cost for our patients, the Frederick County Health Department offers us a space sharing arrangement for all medical appointments, and the pharmaceutical companies Roche, Schering-Plough, InterMune, Forest, Janssen Ortho Foundation, Novartis, and Johnson & Johnson donate medications for many of our patients.  Our staff is largely composed of volunteers and includes medical doctors, nurses, bookeeping and administrative support staff.  This enables us to treat those with medical insurance, the working poor, and the uninsured, with the same level of care and compassion.

The Frederick County Hepatitis Clinic, Inc. is one of Maryland’s largest providers of services for the victims of viral hepatitis and it is the only hepatitis clinic in Maryland that provides comprehensive care for the uninsured, underinsured and working poor.  In recognition of its outstanding record of excellence in this field of medicine the Frederick County Hepatitis Clinic, Inc. received the prestigious 2008 American Liver Foundation Award for Excellence in Access to Care.
